The present invention provides a method of making storage-stable road paving binders by blending a minor amount of an unsaturated polymer (e.g., having at least one diene monomer) with a major amount of asphalt at an elevated temperature such that the components are sufficiently fluid to blend; treating the asphalt-polymer blend with a sulfonating agent (3); and stripping (8) the treated asphalt-polymer blend at an elevated temperature with sufficient stripping gas to remove strippable sulfur moieties and to stabilize the resulting stripped, treated blend. The invention also provides asphaltic compositions made by the method. The asphaltic compositions are useful as binders in road paving applications.

Procédé de réalisation de liants de revêtement de routes stables au stockage consistant à mélanger une petite quantité d'un polymère insaturé (comportant, par exemple, au moins un monomère diénique) avec une grosse quantité d'asphalte à une température élevée, de telle sorte que les composants soient suffisamment fluides lors du mélange. On traite ce mélange asphalte-polymère avec un agent de sulphonation (3). Le mélange asphalte-polymère traité est ensuite désessencié (8) à une température élevée, avec suffisamment de gaz de désessençage pour extraire les fractions soufre désessenciables et pour stabiliser le mélange traité et désessencié. L'invention porte également sur des compositions asphaltiques réalisées selon ce procédé. Ces compositions asphaltiques se révèlent utiles comme liants pour les revêtements de chaussées.
