The invention manifests a voice messaging service embodied by the combination of an intelligent payphone and a voice messaging system (VMS) coupled to a public switched telephone network (PSTN). The intelligent payphone has local processing capabilities whereby functionality relating to the messaging service is implemented. This functionality includes intercepting direct dialed telephone calls, namely local and 1+ toll type calls, which are eligible for the VMS service and initiating the capture process of voice messaging service. Thereafter, the intelligent payphone requests a connection via the PSTN to the VMS and communicates thereto, through an in-band dual tone multi- frequency signaling protocol, call context information necessary for the VMS to continue with the capture of the voice message. The VMS is, of course, responsible for completing the capture of the voice message and subsequent delivery of the captured message. Also, it relies on the payphone to collect and retain appropriate funds prescribed for utilization of the VMS service.
