Apparatus and method is provided for integrating cellular communications with a portable computer for off-loading processor and display intensive functions onto the greater capabilities of the computer. In one embodiment, a cellular transceiver is computer-based. A small wireless telephonic handset interfaces with the computer and cellular transceiver. The computer is used to actuate the cellular transceiver through its input interface or through voice activation. Preferably the handset is incorporated into a data- input stylus for the computer. The computer enables incorporation of encryption/decryption between the handset and computer and voice recognition. The computer can further incorporate a database list and program for storing and receiving phone numbers and thereby actuate the cellular transceiver. The list can be accessed through the computer interface, or through voice recognition through the handset. In another embodiment the cellular transceiver is located in the handset but employs only elementary input/selection functions and minimum energy storage, minimizing the handset's size by relying on the computer's interface for selecting phone lists and synchronizing computer and handset lists and its and power cell for frequent recharging.
