ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides for a peak or trough detection circuit and a method utilizing the circuit to detect peaks and troughs of a varying amplitude waveform signal. The circuit comprises means for receiving a varying amplitude input signal, means for producing a floating reference signal a predetermined voltage difference lower in amplitude relative to each peak or trough, and comparator means for determining when the input signal is equal to the reference signal and thereafter producing a signal indicating a peak or trough has been detected. The method comprises generating a floating reference signal a set voltage drop lower in amplitude relative to each peak or trough of the input signal, comparing the input signal with the reference signal, determining when the input signal is equal to the reference signal and producing a signal indicating a peak or trough has been detected when the input signal is equal to the reference signal. The circuit and method are useful in decoders for decoding data information contained in a varying amplitude analog waveform signal.
