ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Load levelling system for connection to an alternating current network. This system comprises an electrochemical direct current energy supply and line-commutated controllable electronic power convertors having DC terminals connected to the energy supply and AC terminals for connection to the AC network. A con- tinuously controllable reactive power generator is connected to the AC terminals, which comprises a fixed capacitor battery and a line-commutated reactive power convertor. This convertor com- prises a first and a second line-commutated thyristor convertor connection, each convertor connection having DC and AC terminals. The convertor connections are series-connected by means of their DC terminals and have their AC terminals connected together by a transformer. The first convertor connection has a higher rated voltage than the second convertor connection. There are provided means for setting the control angle of the first convertor con- nection to either one of two essentially fixed values, correspon- ding to full direct voltage in rectifying and in inverting opera- tion, respectively, and means for controlling the second convertor connection with a variable control angle.
