A perlite based steel rail excellent in wear resistance and ductility having a perlite structure containing 0.65 to 1.40 mass % of C, wherein in the head corner region thereof and in at least a part of the range from the surface of the top of the head region to a point of a depth of 10 mm, 200 or more of perlite blocks having a particle diameter of 1 to 15 µm are observed per 0.2 mm2 of a checked area; and a method for producing the perlite based steel rail which comprises, in the hot rolling thereof, performing a finish rolling comprising a surface temperature of 850 to 1000~C and a cross section reduction percentage in the last pass of 6 % or more, and then subjecting the head region of said rail to an accelerated cooling at a cooling rate of 1 to 30~C/sec from an austenitic temperature to at least 550~C.

Cette invention se rapporte à un rail d'acier à base de perlite ayant une excellente résistance à l'usure et une excellente ductilité et comportant une structure de perlite contenant 0,65 à 1,40 % en masse de C. Dans la région d'angle de tête de ce rail et dans une partie au moins de la zone comprise entre la surface du dessus de la région de tête et un point à une profondeur de 10 mm, on observe au moins 200 blocs de perlite ayant un diamètre particulaire de 1 à 15 µm par 0,2 mm?2¿ de surface quadrillée ; cette invention se rapportant également à un procédé de production de ce rail d'acier à base de perlite, qui consiste, lors de son laminage à chaud à effectuer un laminage de finissage à une température de surface comprise entre 850 et 1 000· C et à un pourcentage de réduction de section transversale dans la dernière passe d'au moins 6 %, puis à soumettre la région de tête dudit rail à un refroidissement accéléré à une vitesse de refroidissement de 1 à 30· C/sec entre une température austénitique et au moins 550· C.
