ABSTRACT A gelled biological growth medium is prepared by adding a liquid growth medium and low methoxyl pectin material to a culture growth container to produce a gelled growth medium having the low methoxyl pectin material as essentially the sole functional gelling agent. The culture growth contain- er has a growth compatible gel therein which contains a multi- valent metal cation material which is suitable to produce gelling of the low methoxyl pectin material.
