PEELING APPARATUS Abstract of the Disclosure Apparatus for peeling exterior surfaces of elongated generally cylindrical workpieces includes a cutter head rotatable about an axis and having at least one slide mounted thereon for movement generally radially of the axis. A cutter holder has a cutter mounted thereto and is itself mounted on the slide for movement generally toward and away from the rotational axis of the cutter head. A spring assembly is interposed between the slide and holder for biasing the holder generally toward the rotational axis of the cutter head. A follower on the holder engages the ex- terior surface of a workpiece ahead of the cutter for main- taining a uniform relationship between the cutter and work- piece for peeling a substantially uniform layer from the workpiece despite any out-of-roundness. The holder is movably mounted to the slide by a hinge connection. The cutting forces are transmitted to the holder along a force vector line which passes through the hinge connection. The force vector line makes an included angle of between 10-25 with a tangent line which is tangent to the exterior surface of the workpiece at the cutting point.
