The present invention provides a method and apparatus for the delivery of files across the Internet and Wireless application networks. The present invention seeks to combine the ability to download music for free, provide compensation to content creators, and provide statistics that may be sold to record labels, artists, and other interested parties. All files in the system are approved by the artist, or copyright holder, and are as such guaranteed for quality. The method also introduces a new feature unavailable on present peer-to-peer systems: it allows the user to search for files based on parameters that are not uniquely associated with the name of the file. In its present embodiment as a music file sharing system, this search feature would include, for example, a search based on genre of music, or record label.
