The invention provides PEG-IFN .alpha.-lb conjugates, where a PEG moiety is covalently bound to Cys86 of human IFN .alpha. -lb conjugates. A pharmaceutical composition and a method for treating inflammatory diseases, infections, and cancer are also provided. The invention further relates to a method for the modification of interferons by conjugation of a PEG moiety to free cysteine residues in interferon molecules.
