Abstract Compounds of the formula Image wherein R represents a cyclic hydrocarbon group containing from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, R1 represents an acyl group derived from an aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid, which is optionally substituted by an amino group or by one or more hydroxy groups, or from a uronic acid, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a formyl group, R3 represents a hydrogen atoms and R4 represents a methyl group or R3 and R4 together represent a trimethylene group, Y represents a carbonyl, sulphonyl or methylene group, m stands for an integer of 2 to 6 and n stands for zero, 1 or 2 and wherein the configuration at the carbon atoms designated as (a) and (b) is L, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are des- cribed. These compounds and salts are useful in the treat- ment of degenerative diseases (e.g. emphysema and arthritis) associated with the action of elastase-like enzymes and in the treatment of inflammatory conditions in which elastase- like enzymes act as mediators of inflammation.
