A new group of cyclic lipopeptide antibiotics, the A54145 antibiotics, which have the general formula: Image wherein: R is hydrogen, C8-C18-alkyl, optionally substituted C8-C18-alkanoyl or C8-C18-alkenoyl; (Lys-R1) represents -NH(CH2)4CH(NHR1)CO-; R1 and R2 are hydrogen or an amino-protecting group; or R and R2, taken together, represent a C8-C18- alkylidene group; X is Ile or Val; and Y is Glu or 3-MG; and their salts, are antibacterial agents or inter- mediates to such agents. The A54145 active compounds improve growth performance in animals; thus, feed compositions for promoting growth in animals such as poultry and methods for increasing growth in animals using these compositions, are also provided.
