ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A percolation column is provided particularly for cof- fee extraction in which there is a central cylindrical section and cone-shaped end sections terminating in an inlet and outlet valve. The diameters of the inlet and outlet valves are equal to or greater than 1/4 of the diameter of the central cylindrical section and bayonet filters are provided which traverse the end cones and are inserted at positions where the local cone diameter is at least twice that of the diameter of the associated inlet or outlet valve. Preferably the dead space volume resulting from the filters is not greater that 1 per cent of the total column volume. When employed for coffee extraction, processing improve- ments, including a reduction in heat losses, improved rate of extraction and a reduction of at least 50% in required contact time, are obtainable.
