PERFLUOROALKYL PHENOLS AND NAPHTHOLS, PROCESS FOR THEIR MANUFACTURE AND THEIR USE ABSTRACT The instant invention relates to compounds of the formula Image wherein each Rf is independently straight or branched chain perfluoroalkyl of 2 to 18 carbon atoms or perfluoroalkoxy-perfluoroalkyl of 4 to 18 carbon atoms, each R1 is independently straight or branched chain alkylene of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, optionally interrupted by oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen atoms, R2, R3 and R4 are independently hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl or alkoxy, and R2 and R3 additionally may, together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, form a fused benzo ring, is hydrogen, alkyl, optionally substituted by hydroxy, alkoxy or phenyl, x is 0, 1 or 2, and M is hydrogen or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or amine cation. These compounds are useful as surfactants, water repellents and intermediates.
