Form 24 (s.s. 21, 31, 34, & 142) Abstract It is a tool for splitting wood, specifically a hollow steel sheath fabricated in the exact configuration of a plastic wedge commonly used in the logging industry. To use it, a plastic wedge is inserted into the metal sheath and both are simultaneously driven into the wood by hammer force striking the plastic wedge. Specification This invention relates to a manually driven wedge used for splitting wood. The plastic only wedges now in use are very frail relative to the forces they are subjected to, and therefore have a limited lifespan. The plastic only wedges are also somewhat flexible which often causes them to bounce forcibly out of their intended direction. This makes them hazardous to the workman, and the plastic wedges cover enough distance to make retrieval difficult. An all-steel wedge is dangerous because of steel particles dislodged by the force of steel (i.e. hammer) on steel wedge. Further, the weight of all- steel wedges make them impractical to handle and carry.
