A wood article is submitted to a vacuum in an autoclave to remove air that it contains. Then, a solution which contains a water-soluble cross-linkable prepolymer, a polymerization initiator and optionally a wood preservative is introduced into the autoclave. Polymerization to form a polymeric network in the wood article is carried out in an atmosphere which may be substantially free of oxygen, while the optionally present preservative is chemically fixed to the wood. The result is a wood article with a permanently reduced hardness and an increased moisture content at equilibrium.

Un article en bois est soumis à un passage sous vide dans une autoclave afin de retirer l'air qu'il contient. Puis, une solution contenant un prepolymère réticulable et hydrosoluble, un initiateur de polymérisation et, éventuellement, un produit de préservation du bois est introduite dans l'autoclave. La polymérisation permettant de créer un réseau polymère dans l'article en bois est réalisée dans une atmosphère qui peut être sensiblement exempte d'oxygène; le produit de conservation éventuellement ajouté étant fixé au bois de manière chimique. Ce procédé permet d'obtenir un article en bois présentant une diminution permanente de la dureté et une teneur en eau plus importante en équilibre.
