A multi-step bleaching method for bleaching a substrate in an aqueous suspension using a multi-stage bleaching sequence having one or more peroxide stages is disclosed. The method comprises that during a first step, the pH is monitored to determine that the pH is about 4.0 or less, or an acid generator is added to adjust the suspension to have an acidic pH of about 4.0 or less. Then, during a second step, said second step occurring during a peroxide stage following the pH monitoring/ adjusting step, a selected phosphonic acid based chelating agent, preferably having at least four phosphonic acid moieties, such as DTMPA chelating agent or BL335 chelating agent, is added.
