The preparation of an uncrosslinked polysilazane containing chemically bound peroxide groups by reacting a polysilazane and a hydroperoxide at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the hydroperoxide is disclosed. A thermoset polymer is formed by heating a peroxide- substituted silazane that is also substituted by alkenyl groups or alkynyl groups. The chemically bound peroxide decomposes to yield a free radical, thereby initiating crosslinking of the unsaturated groups. The peroxide- substituted polysilazanes can be pyrolyzed to form ceramic articles.
