This invention relates to personal computers, and particularly to a personal computer having provision for identifying the storage capability of removable media used in a direct access storage device associated with the computer. The apparatus disclosed distinguishes among a plurality of types of removable media potentially used in removable media direct access storage devices using at least certain ones of a plurality of signal communicating pathways extending between a storage device and a controller for the storage device to identify to the controller the type of media inserted into the device with which the controller is communicating.
