The Radioactive materials detection sensor and alarm device (also referred to as RadDetect ACG 1250) provides early detection/notification of the presence of radioactive materials using both scintillator materials with photoelectric sensors and Thin Film Transistor (TFT) sensors. TFT sensors such as those used in pressure sensitive finger print sensors and display systems are subject to failure when exposed to the presence of radioactive materials. The junctions of the unshielded transistors are "blown out" by the presence of radioactive emissions. In this application the TFT sensor is monitored by on--board diagnostic software which detects the "failure" of the junctions. When the failure occurs in a specified area on the sensor the source of the radioactive emission can be identified. Once the junctions start "blowing out" the debug software notifies the communications software providing the electronic signaling to the common interface. The interface firmware can then provide a variety of signaling and data transmission options including sounding of a local alarm, reporting via cellular or satellite networks to a central monitoring location and the activation of a Global Positioning System (GPS) for determining the exact location of the presence of the radioactive materials.
