A personal video recording system (150) is provided that acquires real-time video and audio information in, and in the vicinity of, a user's home (152, 158, 160). Acquired video and audio information may be stored on a storage device (156) included in user television equipment (130) or at any other suitable location. Current information may be presented to the user in real- time. The user may also access stored information for playback. The user may use a guidance application (170) to aid in the retrieval of information. The personal video recording system may provide a user interface to manipulate audio and video information. Information may be shared between multiple personal video recording systems. The personal video recording system may also be used for surveillance.
