ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Adding a small quantity of water to a sulfonation mixture of a highly aromatic oil produces a readily separable two-phase system from which higher equivalent weight petroleum sulfonic acids can be recovered. This separation is part of a petroleum sulfonation process using highly aromatic oils as the feedstock.
