Abstract A sustained release pharmaceutical composition in table-t form comprises an effective amount of an orally- active therapeutic agent, 0.8 to 1. 6% by weight of a release controlling agent and 1.0 to 7.5% by weight of an erosion promoting agent, the relative amounts of the components being such that a criticality factor calculated according to equation I lies in the range 20 to 450. Equation 1 is Image I wherein CF is the criticality factor, CA is the. amount of therapeutic agent per tablet in milligrams divided by the amount of release controlling agent per tablet in milli- grams and CS is the amount of erosion promoting agent per tablet in milligrams divided by the amount of release controlling agent per-tablet in milligrams, Suitable therapeutic agents include acetylsalicylic acid, ibuprofen and flurbiprofen. A preferred release controlling agent is cellulose acetate phthalate and a preferred erosion promoting agent is corn starch.
