ABSTRACT There are a limited number of pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of disease characterized by reduced blood flow, oxygen availabil- ity or carbohydrate metabolism in the cardiovascular system. The present invention expands the number of such pharmaceutical compositions by provid- ing a pharmaceutical composition in unit dosage form comprising a compound of the formula: Image --- (I) wherein R is hydrogen, lower alkyl, hydroxy, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, lower alkanoyloxy or halogen; R1 is hydrogen, lower alkyl or halogen; and R2 is hydroxy or lower alkoxy; or, when R2 is hydroxy, a pharmaceutically acceptable metal, ammonium, amine or amino acid salt thereof; together with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier.
