Abstract There is described a sterile ointment basis, suitable for use in the eye, comprising 70 to 90% by weight of soft paraffin, 5 to 15% of liquid paraffin, and 0.1 to 15% by weight of acetylated lanolin in which 40 to 100% of the available hydroxy groups have been acetylated. There is also described an ointment comprising the ointment basis and 0.5 to 15% by weight of the disodium salt of 1,3-bis (2-carboxychromon-5-yloxy)propan-2-ol as active ingredient.
