ABSTRACT Dextran sulphate and salts thereof are used to inhibit replication of HTLV-III (AIDS) virus both in vivo and in vitro. The same compounds are used in solution to inhibit the destructive action of HTLV virus upon human lymphocyte T helper cells. The dextran sulphate or salts thereof may have a molecular weight in the range of 3,000-500,000 and a sulphur content of 12-25% with a preferred molecular weight range of about 7,000-12,000. In view of the fact that the most effective dosages are such that the anticoagulant activity of dextran sulphate offers a significant potential to cause bleeding or hemorrhaging after extended use applicant has discovered that the hydrogenation of the dextran prior to sulfation produce a dextran sulphate derivative having a greatly lowered anticoagulant activity without affecting efficacy and thus permits the administration of higher dose levels of the compound.
