The invention relates to a method of administering the dispensing of a sample quantity of a pharmaceutical product to a patient by a dispensary. The method comprises first receiving a dispensing request from a dispensary, wherein the request includes data from a redeemed portable media representing a sample quantity of a pharmaceutical product, the portable media being redeemed by a patient at the dispensary. The method then further comprises adjudicating the request using pharmaceutical product data from the portable media and reference pharmaceutical product data stored in a computer database of a pharmacy benefit manager of a pharmaceutical insurance claim adjudication system, and in the event that the request is approved, instructing the dispensary to dispense to the patient a sample quantity of the pharmaceutical product from the dispensary's general product inventory, as specified on the redeemed product media.
