A terpyridine derivative represented by formula (I): Image (I) wherein R represents a hydrogen atom; a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, pyridyl group, etc., which has a nerve growth factor synthesis-stimulating activity or a neurotrophic activity. Accordingly, the terpyridine derivative can be used for improving or treating conditions or diseases associated with traumatic, chemical (alcohol or carcinostatic agents), inflammatory, metabolic (observed in diabetes, etc.) or idiopathic denaturation of peripheral nerves. The terpyridine derivatives of the present invention may also be used as drugs for the improvement and treatment of psychological malfunction, locomotor malfunction or paravertebral anesthesia, etc., caused by conditions or diseases associated with denaturation of central nerves, e.g., Alzheimer and cerebro-vascular dementia, Down's syndrome, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's chorea, cerebral ischemia, cerebral infarction, head trauma, and the like.
