ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Novel 5-phenyl-2,3,4,5-t?trahydro-1H-1,4-benzodizepin-2- one derivatives having -the general formula: Image (I') wherein R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and each repre- sents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atom, a halogen atom, a nitro, cyano or trifluoromethyl group; R4 repre- sents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group of 3-6 carbon atoms, a phenylalkyl group having 1-2 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety, an aryl group of 6-10 carbon atoms or phenacyl group; R5 and R6 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms; and A represents a polymethylene group of 2-4 carbon atoms which may be substituted with an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, show excellent tranquilizing and antidipressant activites and thus are useful as a minor tranquilizer. Such benzodiazepine derivatives are prepared by reacting the corresponding 5-phenyl- 2,3-dihydro-1H-1,4-benzodiazepine-2-one derivative with an appro- priate alkanol derivative.
