- 15 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A frequency synthesizer using a phase-locked loop is disclosed. The frequency synthesis is accomplished by a closed loop arrangement comprising: a reference oscillator, a phase detector, a programmable counter, a phase detector, a loop filter, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), and a frequency translator. The phase detector is supplied with a reference signal from the reference oscillator and a signal from the programmable counter, and compares phases of the two signals. A frequency translator is provided in a manner to receive the signal from the VCO and downward translate the frequency of the signal received. The output of the frequency translator is fed to the programmable counter which divides a signal applied by a variable divide value and applies the divided signal to the phase detector.
