Described is a novel gene and its encoded basic Helix Loop Helix protein, termed PHELIX, and to diagnostic and therapeutic methods and compositions useful in the management of various cancers which express PHELIX, particularly including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, ovarian cancer and testicular cancer. In human normal tissues, PHELIX is only expressed in testis tissue. However, PHELIX is expressed at high levels in prostate cancer cells and in other cancer cells. The structure of PHELIX suggests that it may function as a transcription factor that normally exhibits a testis-specific expression pattern but is turned on in prostate cancer as well as in other cancers.

L'invention concerne un nouveau gène et sa protéine de base hélice-boucle-hélice codée, appelée PHELIX, et des procédés et des compositions diagnostiques et thérapeutiques utiles dans la gestion de différents cancers qui expriment PHELIX, en particulier le cancer de la prostate, le cancer de la vésicule, le cancer des ovaires et le cancer des testicules. Dans des tissus humains normaux, PHELIX est exprimé uniquement dans le tissu testiculaire. Par contre, PHELIX est exprimé à des niveaux élevés dans les cellules cancéreuses de la prostate et dans d'autres cellules cancéreuses. La structure de PHELIX laisse supposer qu'elle peut fonctionner comme un facteur de transcription qui normalement présente un modèle d'expression spécifique aux testicules, mais qui évolue dans le cancer de la prostate ainsi que dans d'autres cancers.
