PRECIS DE LA DIVULGATION: La présente invention concerne un procédé de chloration par le chlore gazeux de composés phénoliques substitués en positions ortho par rapport à la fonction hydroxyle. Tout particulièrement, il concerne un procédé de chloration par le chlore gazeux de composés phénoliques de formule générale (I): Image (I) dans laquelle: - les symboles X, identiques ou différents, représentent un atome de chlore ou de brome, ou un groupement méthyle, éthyle, méthoxy, éthoxy ou acétoxy, et - le symbole Y représente un atome d'hydrogène ou un groupement méthyle, éthyle, méthoxy ou éthoxy, caractérisé en ce que l'on opère en présence d'une quantité efficace d'un acide fort ou d'un acide de Lewis. Il s'applique plus particulièrement à la chloration du dichloro-2,6 phénol en trichloro-2,4,6 phénol. Ce procédé permet de résoudre les problèmes de rendements inhérents aux procédés de l'art antérieur.
