-1- Abstract of Disclosure Mixtures of B-phenylethyl alcohol and B-phenylethyl acetate are prepared by homologation of mixtures containing benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde benzyl acetate, and dibenzyl ethers in the presence of a cobalt catalyst. The feedstock may be obtained by acetoxylation of toluene followed by hydrolysis, or alternatively, by oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde followed by reduction to benzyl alcohol . Components in the reactor effluent, e.g., dibenzyl ethers, may be recycled to suppress by-product formation and increase the overall yield of the process.
