ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is provided a phenylindane diamine mixture having the formula Image which consists essentially of 10 to 80% by weight of 5-amino-1-(4'-amino- phenyl)-1,3,3-trimethylindane and from 90 to 20% by weight of 6-amino-1- (4'-aminophenyl)-1,3,3-trimethylindane. The mixture is prepared by a process comprising acid-catalyzed dimerization of .alpha.-methylstyrene and sub- sequent nitration and reduction of the phenylindane reaction product. This phenylindane diamine mixture is useful in polyimide polymers and as a curing agent for epoxy resins.
