The invention concerns a process for phosphating metal surfaces, wherein phosphating is carried out using a zinc-containing phosphating solution which is nitrite and nickel-free. Rinsing is then optionally carried out, followed by re-rinsing with an aqueous solution having a pH of between 3 and 7 and containing between 0.001 and 10 g/l of one or more of the cations of Li, Cu and Ag.
