The invention provides a component that enables a method of reducing the power used in providing light. The invention comprises a non ultraviolet, visible light source such as an LED, light emitting diode or incandescent bulb and a phosphorescent coating. The coating may be any colour or combination of colours. Example colours include: red, orange, green, violet, white and yellow. The coating is applied directly over the white light source. The white light source is intended to be activated for a fraction of the total viewing time only. During the remaining viewing time, while the light source is off, the phosphorescent coating glows thereby providing light without the consumption of applied power.
