This invention provides a process for preparing a phosphinoarylalkene and polymers thereof comprising reacting an arylalkene bearing a leaving group attached to a carbon atom of the aryl ring, or a polymer thereof, with a phosphine in the presence of a Group VIIIa metal catalyst. The polymer resins may be used as metal sequestering agents or phase transfer catalysts, or as ligands for transition metals and supported catalysts.
