ABSTRACT Phosphorus-containing compounds represented by the formula Image wherein each R1 is a hydrogen atom or hydrocarbon group having 1 - 10 carbon atoms which may contain a hydroxyl group, R2 and R3 may be a halogen atom (F, Cl, Br, I) or a hydrocarbon group having 1 - 10 carbon atoms, n2 and n3 each being an integer from 0 - 4. In addition when R1 is a hydrogen atom, dehydration to form the corresponding acid anhydride is also a compound of the invention. These compounds serve as flame retardants in polymers, especially polyesters, where they may be introduced during normal polymerisation reaction conditions.
