An alignment layer on a first substrate (1) comprises a material which can be altered from a first to a second state by the action of incident light (5) of at least a first wavelength, the first and second states causing adjacent portions of a liquid crystal layer (3) to tend to adopt corresponding different first and second alignments. As the alignment layer is altered from its first to its said second state, realignment of the liquid crystal is facilitated by changing its ordering out of the first alignment, for example by applying an electric field (as shown from in-plane electrodes (7)), or by disrupting the liquid crystal ordering. The alignment layer may comprise a Schiff base, azo dye or a stilbene which can effectively realign in response to incident polarised light producing cis-trans isomerisation therein. The liquid crystal layer may be locally realigned by local optical and/or electrical addressing (as shown from (a) to (c) a local beam (5) alters the planar alignment direction at substrate (1)).
La présente invention concerne une couche d'alignement sur un premier substrat (1) qui comprend un matériau qui peut être modifié d'un premier état à un second état par l'action de la lumière incidente (5) d'au moins une première longueur d'onde, le premier et le second état se caractérisant par le fait que les parties contiguës d'une couche (3) de cristaux liquides tendent à adopter un premier et second alignement correspondant différent. Lorsque la couche d'alignement est modifiée de son premier état à son second état, le réalignement des cristaux liquides est facilité par le changement de son ordonnancement par rapport au premier alignement, par exemple par l'application d'un champ électrique (comme illustré à partir d'électrodes dans le plan (7)), ou par dislocation de l'ordonnancement des cristaux liquides. La couche d'alignement peut comprendre une base de Schiff, un colorant azoïque ou un colorant de stilbène qui peuvent réaligner efficacement en réponse à la lumière incidente polarisée produisant une isomérisation cis-trans dans cette couche. La couche de cristaux liquide peut être réalignée localement par une attaque locale optique et/ou électrique (comme illustré de (a) à (c) un faisceau local (5) modifie la direction de l'alignement plan au niveau du substrat (1)).
