ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A device for the dimensional measurement of articles comprises a receiver spaced from and aligned with a source for emitting a light beam. The receiver receives the light beam and emits a corresponding signal. The source and receiver func- tion as a photo-coupler unit. First and second supports support individual articles to be controlled and the photo-coupler unit. A motor provides relative movement between the first and second supports thereby causing blocking of the light beam by the ar- ticle and carrying out the scanning of the article. A digital counter has minimum and maximum preselectable measurement values. A measuring device measures the signal produced by the receiver during scanning. Logic circuits couple a linear transducer to the counter to control the readout thereof. The measuring device includes a linear amplifier connected to the receiver which amplifies the signal produced by the receiver and is calibrated to a level such that it provides a signal only when the axis of the light beam is blocked by the article.The linear transducer directly measures the relative movement of the supports thereby directly and accurately measuring articles of any shape and length greater than one micron.
