The present invention is an improved photoacoustic sample vessel, having an acoustic coupler having a chamber for holding a liquid sample. The chamber is defined by a first body and a second body defining walls of the chamber and the second body has an acoustic detector mounted thereon. Electromagnetic energy generates an acoustic signal within the liquid sample. The acoustic signal propagates through the liquid sample into and through the second body to the acoustic detector. The improvement is the chamber having a container with the liquid sample therein and a couplant between the container and the walls of the chamber for acoustically coupling the liquid sample to the detector.
