ABSTRACT A process is provided for the capture and storage of solar energy comprising exposing a photoisomerizable compound having a high energy density, such as a carboxylate ester of norbornadiene, to solar radiation in the presence of a photosensitizer capable of absorbing in the visible portion of the solar spectrum. A tandem system is further provided for capturing an increased portion of the solar spectrum utilizing a plurality of photoisomerizable compounds and non-overlapping photosensitizers. -
