A naphthopyran compound of general formula (I) wherein R1 represents an alkyl group or an aryl group; each of R4 and R5, which may be the same or different, independently represents an alkyl, alkenyl, carbocyclic or heterocyclic group, or R4 and R5 taken together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a carbocyclic ring or a heterocyclic ring; and R6 represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent selected from alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, heteroaryl, halogen, amino, substituted amino, azo, imino, amide, carboxylate, ester, cyano, trifluoromethyl or nitro, and in addition R6 may represent a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring fused to ring A. The naphthopyran compounds of the invention are useful as photochromic materials in lenses, e.g. sunglasses, and photochromic transparencies for cars and aircrafts.

Composé de naphtopyranne de la formule générale (I), dans laquelle R1 représente un groupe alkyle ou aryle; R4 et R5, qui peuvent être identiques ou différents, représentent chacun indépendamment un groupe alkyle, alcényle, carbocyclique ou hétérocyclique, ou R4 et R5 forment, avec l'atome de carbone auquel ils sont rattachés, un noyau carbocyclique ou hétérocyclique; et R6 représente un atome d'hydrogène ou un substituant choisi entre alkyle, alcoxy, aryle, aryloxy, hétéroaryle, halogène, amino, amino substitué, azo, imino, amide, carboxylate, ester, cyano, trifluorométhyle ou nitro, R6 pouvant en outre représenter un noyau carbocyclique ou hétérocyclique fusionné au noyau A. Les composés de naphtopyrane de l'invention sont aptes à être utilisés comme matériaux photochromiques dans des verres, notamment des lunettes de soleil, et des vitrages photochromiques pour voitures et avions.
