Abstract of the Disclosure Characters are projected from a spinning disc on a carriage which moves relative to the stationary film to space characters on the film. A lens holder with a plurality of lenses of different magnifications normally is locked to the carriage and moves with the disc during character spacing motion, but can be selectively unlocked and moved relative to the disc in order to change from one character row to another, or bring a different lens into use, thus easily changing the style and/or size of characters. In this disclosure, a pi-character matrix bearing auxiliary characters and/or symbols is attached to the carriage, at a location beyond the disc but near the travel path of the lens holder. In projecting images from the pi-character matrix, the lens holder is moved relative to the carriage until the selected pi- character or symbol is aligned with the desired lens. An auxiliary lamp then is energized to illuminate the character or symbol. Preferably, the symbols include slots for use in making horizontal and vertical lines or "rules". The lamp is energized continuously and either the character spacing mechanism or the line spacing mechanism is operated while the lamp is lighted, thus forming continuous lines on the film. The use of a turret as a lens holder is described. The turret is rotatable to change styles and/or sizes by bringing a new lens into operative position. The turret is rotated by a selective drive coupling which uses the motion produced by the character spacing mech- anism to rotate the turret.
