- 14 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A backpack for carrying photography surveying equipment and the like comprises a main compartment which is closeable by a hinged cover which has a closure member extending around the periphery of the cover, with one end of the cover being hinged to the backpack. The cover which defines the outermost rearwardly surface of the backpack includes longitudinally extending location means for positioning and holding a tripod substantially aligned with the spine of the human being when the backpack is worn. The backpack thus provides an integral carrier for a tripod and locates that tripod to minimize the polar moment of inertia of the loaded pack. In a particularly preferred embodiment the backpack also contains compartments located at the lower side edges of the backpack which may be accessed through openable flaps while the backpack is being worn so as to enable a photographer to extract a camera such as a 35 mm camera from the accessible pocket without removing the backpack.
