Spent photographic effluent containing iron ions flows in a carrier liquid through at least one venturi passage to a drain; iron ions in the effluent precipitate as iron oxides. A flushing flow of flushing liquid flushes iron oxide deposits from surfaces of the venturi passage exposed to the effluent during interruptions of effluent flow through the venturi passage. The flushing flow may also be employed to flush deposits of iron oxides from exposed surfaces adjacent conduits through which the effluent flows. In this way, clogging or blockage of passages, especially the narrow venturi passage is avoided, so that effluent disposed can proceed on a continuous basis, avoiding flooding, and shut down for cleaning.
