Abstract of the Disclosure A light image of an object to be recognized is scanned in a series of narrow elongated laterally dis- placed parallel areas. Photoelectric means responds successively to the overall light from successive areas and produces corresponding signals. These signals are converted to corresponding digital values. The resultant digital representation of the object may be compared by a computer with digital representations of other objects obtained in the same manner to determine whether they are alike or unlike.
