A photonic cross-connect comprises a plurality of ingress WS--switches (1, 3) with drop outputs (13, 33) outputting WDM drop signals (D1, D3) comprising only odd channels and a plurality of egress WS-switches (2, 4) for receiving WDM add signals comprising only add channels. All wavelength selective elements (7, 8, 13, 14) in a drop path and in an add path comply with a double frequency spacing and about a double bandwidth of the ingress WS-switches or egress WS--switches. If in another embodiment both odd and even channels are dropped and added, separate add and drop paths are provided for the odd and for the even channels.
