A photonic integrated circuit "PIC" device comprising two or more vertically stacked asymmetric waveguides is provided. A photo-detector PIC device comprises a first coupling waveguide (114) for providing a low-coupling loss with an external optical fiber and for guiding primarily a first mode of light, a second waveguide (116) vertically coupled to the first waveguide (114) for guiding primarily a second mode of light having an effective index of refraction different from the first mode, and a photo-detector (118) vertically coupled to the second waveguide (116). Light received at the coupling waveguide is moved into the second waveguide via a lateral taper (117) in the second waveguide. The photo-detector PIC may further comprise a third waveguide having an optical amplifier therein and positioned between the coupling waveguide and the second waveguide.
L'invention porte sur un dispositif à circuit intégré photonique "PIC" à deux ou plus de deux guides d'ondes empilés verticalement, et sur un photodétecteur du type PIC comportant: un guide d'ondes (114) de couplage réduisant les pertes de couplage avec une fibre optique extérieure et guidant principalement la lumière d'un premier mode, et un second guide d'ondes (116) couplé verticalement au premier guide d'ondes (114) et guidant principalement la lumière d'un deuxième mode d'un indice de réfraction efficace différent de celui du premier mode, et un photodétecteur (118) couplé verticalement au second guide d'ondes (116). La lumière reçue par le guide d'ondes de couplage passe dans le second guide d'ondes via un prolongement effilé de ce dernier. Le photodétecteur PIC peut également comporter un troisième guide d'ondes à amplificateur optique, placé entre le premier guide d'ondes et le second guide d'ondes.
