A photothermographic element capable of providing an image density that exceeds background fog by at least 1.2 optical density units comprising a support bearing at least one photothermographic medium comprising: (a) a photosensitive silver halide; (b) a non-photosensitive, reducible silver source; (c) a reducing agent for the non-photosensitive, reducible silver source; (d) a toner; and (e) a binder; in which the reducing agent comprises a hydroxamic acid compound, and in which the toner comprises a mixture of phthalazine and a phthalic acid derivative.
